German driver Christian Lautenschlager in the winning Mercedes leading George Boillot s Peugeot, July 4th, 1914 at the French Grand Prix at Circuit de Lyons. Over 300,000 people were out around the 23 mile circuit to watch 41 cars battle for both technical and national rivalries. Lautenschlager, who had started five minutes behind Boillot, moved up steadily and on the 18th lap took over the lead to win. Lautenschlager had won the race in 1908 but there would be no applause for the winner this time as war broke out less than a month later between the two countries.
